Short answer

Viagra (sildenafil) is prescription-only in Denmark. A licensed Danish doctor can prescribe it after a phone consultation, and the e-prescription is sent to your own pharmacy, often the same day. Generic sildenafil is the same substance as Viagra and costs from DKK 34.30 for 12 tablets of 50 mg, against DKK 1,292.85 for 12 original Viagra tablets (28 September to 11 October 2026).

How do I get a Viagra prescription in Denmark?

You get a Viagra prescription from a licensed doctor, either your own GP or an online clinic, who may prescribe it after a phone consultation when it is medically responsible.

Only pharmacies and online pharmacies registered with the Danish Medicines Agency (Lægemiddelstyrelsen) may dispense sildenafil. What you can legally do online is the doctor's assessment and the prescription. The e-prescription is stored on your CPR number in the shared Danish prescription system, so you can collect the tablets at your own pharmacy or order them from a Danish online pharmacy with discreet delivery.

  1. Answer 3 questionsAbout your goal, how often erections are a problem, and your heart and blood pressure, on Recepta's erectile dysfunction page. The pages are in Danish. For this treatment you can type your name when booking instead of logging in with MitID, and the doctor confirms your identity on the phone.
  2. Book a free phone consultationChoose a time, also evenings and weekends, or ask the doctor to call as soon as possible, typically within a few hours.
  3. The doctor assesses youThe doctor chooses between sildenafil and tadalafil and a dose, and sends the e-prescription to your own pharmacy, often the same day.
  4. Collect the medicineAt the pharmacy or from a Danish online pharmacy. Prescription, renewals and dose adjustment are part of the programme.

What is Viagra, and is generic sildenafil the same?

Viagra is the brand name of sildenafil, and generic sildenafil tablets contain the same substance in the same dose as the original.

Viagra was the first medicine for erectile dysfunction, approved in 1998. Sildenafil is a PDE5 inhibitor: it blocks an enzyme that would otherwise break down the signal substance that makes the blood vessels in the penis widen. Your own erection comes more easily and lasts longer when you are sexually aroused. The medicine does not cause an erection by itself and does not affect desire.

Generic tablets are approved by the same authorities with the requirement of the same absorption in the body. The difference is the price. The doctor usually prescribes generic sildenafil, and the pharmacy offers the cheapest equivalent pack.

How much does Viagra cost in Denmark?

Generic sildenafil costs from DKK 34.30 for 12 tablets of 50 mg and from DKK 47.70 for 12 tablets of 100 mg, while original Viagra costs DKK 1,292.85 for 12 tablets of 50 mg.

On top of the medicine comes the doctor-led programme. It covers the prescription, all renewals, dose adjustment and follow-up. A single consultation without membership costs DKK 299.

How do you take Viagra?

The standard dose is 50 mg, taken about an hour before sex, and you should take at most one tablet a day.

The doctor can adjust to 25 mg if you get side effects, or to 100 mg if the effect is too small. The tablet works fastest on an empty stomach; a heavy, fatty meal delays the effect. The effect needs sexual stimulation and lasts 4 to 6 hours. Larger amounts of alcohol weaken the erection and increase the risk of dizziness.

Tadalafil (Cialis) is an alternative that lasts up to 36 hours and also comes as a low daily dose. Read sildenafil vs tadalafil.

Who should not take Viagra?

You must never combine sildenafil with nitrate medicine such as nitroglycerin, used for angina, because blood pressure can drop dangerously.

You also cannot use it with unstable heart disease, after a heart attack or stroke within the last 6 months, with very low blood pressure, severe liver or kidney disease or certain rare eye diseases. The most common side effects are headache, flushing, a blocked nose, heartburn and temporary visual disturbances such as a bluish tinge; they are usually mild. An erection lasting more than 4 hours needs a doctor straight away.

Can I get Viagra without a prescription in Denmark?

No, Viagra and all other sildenafil is prescription-only in Denmark.

Online shops selling Viagra without a prescription to people in Denmark act illegally. The Danish Medicines Agency regularly finds fake tablets with too little, too much or a completely different active substance, which can be dangerous for a man with undetected heart disease. The consultation at Recepta is free, so there is no reason to take the risk.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a Viagra prescription online in Denmark the same day?
Often, yes. At Recepta you answer 3 questions, book a free phone consultation or ask the doctor to call as soon as possible, and if the doctor approves the treatment, the e-prescription is sent to your own pharmacy the same day.
Is sildenafil as good as Viagra?
Yes. Sildenafil is the active substance in Viagra, and generic tablets contain the same substance in the same dose and are approved by the same authorities. The difference is the price.
How quickly does Viagra work?
After about 30 to 60 minutes, fastest on an empty stomach. The effect lasts 4 to 6 hours, and you need to be sexually stimulated for it to work.
What is the difference between Viagra and Cialis?
Viagra (sildenafil) works for 4 to 6 hours and is taken as needed. Cialis (tadalafil) works for up to 36 hours and also comes as a low daily dose. The effect is the same; back pain is more common on tadalafil.
Is it discreet to get Viagra online in Denmark?
Yes. The whole process takes place from home by phone, and doctors' confidentiality and GDPR cover everything. Like all medicine, the prescription appears on your personal medication record, but Recepta never sends physical post.
Can I drink alcohol with Viagra?
A single glass is usually not a problem, but larger amounts weaken the erection and increase the risk of low blood pressure and dizziness together with the medicine.

No. For erectile dysfunction you can type your name when booking, and the doctor confirms your identity during the phone consultation.
