Online doctor in Denmark: how online consultations and e-prescriptions work

A prescription from an online doctor in Denmark is exactly the same electronic prescription your own GP issues. Here is how an online consultation works, how the e-prescription gets to the pharmacy, what MitID and your CPR number have to do with it, and how to check that a clinic is safe.

Short answer

In Denmark, a licensed doctor may prescribe medicine after a video or phone consultation when it is medically responsible. The doctor sends an electronic prescription to the shared Danish prescription system, where it is stored on your CPR number, so you can collect the medicine at the pharmacy you choose or order it from a Danish online pharmacy, usually the same day or the next. You pay for the medicine at the pharmacy.

Can an online doctor in Denmark prescribe medicine?

Yes, licensed Danish doctors may issue prescriptions after a consultation on video or phone, when the doctor judges that it is medically responsible.

The rules are the same as with your own GP: the doctor must assess your health and your medication before a prescription is issued, and a medical record is kept. For some treatments there are special requirements. The Danish Patient Safety Authority (Styrelsen for Patientsikkerhed) requires that weight loss medication is started on video, while erectile dysfunction treatment can take place by phone.

The doctor can also say no. If the doctor judges that the treatment is not right for you, the doctor explains why, and at Recepta you then pay DKK 0.

What is an e-prescription in Denmark?

An e-prescription is an electronic prescription that the doctor sends to the shared Danish prescription system, where it is stored on your CPR number until you collect the medicine.

There is no paper prescription. Once the doctor has issued it, any Danish pharmacy can find it on your CPR number, the Danish personal identification number. The prescription also appears on your personal medication record, the Shared Medication Record (Det Fælles Medicinkort), like all other prescription medicine.

Both routes, your own GP or an online clinic, are legal and lead to the same electronic prescription. The difference lies in time, price and follow-up, not in the prescription.

How does an online consultation work in Denmark?

You answer some questions about your health, talk to the doctor on video or phone, and if the doctor approves the treatment, the e-prescription is sent to your pharmacy right after the consultation.

  1. Answer questionsYou answer a few questions about your health and fill in your details. At Recepta you log in with MitID, the Danish digital ID. For erectile dysfunction you can instead type your name when booking, and the doctor confirms your identity on the phone.
  2. Talk to the doctorYou book a free consultation, on video for weight loss and by phone for erectile dysfunction. You choose the time yourself, also evenings and weekends.
  3. The doctor sends the e-prescriptionIf the doctor approves the treatment, the prescription is sent electronically to your own pharmacy, often the same day.
  4. Collect the medicineYou collect and pay for the medicine at the pharmacy, or order it from a Danish online pharmacy with discreet delivery.

Recepta's booking pages and the MitID login are Danish systems, and the pages are in Danish. If you have questions before booking, you can write to kontakt@recepta.dk.

Where do I collect medicine from an e-prescription?

At the pharmacy you choose, or from a Danish online pharmacy, usually the same day or the next, depending on whether the pharmacy has the medicine in stock.

You do not need to choose a pharmacy in advance, because the prescription is stored on your CPR number. If you do not want to collect it yourself, you can order from an online pharmacy registered with the Danish Medicines Agency (Lægemiddelstyrelsen).

The price is the same everywhere. Pharmacy prices for prescription medicine are the same across Denmark and are set every 14 days, both in physical pharmacies and at registered online pharmacies; only a delivery fee differs. See medication prices in Denmark.

Recepta does not sell medicine. Danish clinics may not sell prescription medicine themselves, so the prescription always goes through a pharmacy. If a website offers to send medicine directly to you without a pharmacy, it is not a clinic.

How much does an online doctor cost in Denmark?

At Recepta the consultation is free and the first 4 weeks cost DKK 0; after that you pay for the programme, and the medicine is paid separately at the pharmacy.

Recepta doctor-led programme per 4 weeks (medicine bought separately at the pharmacy)
Treatment1-year membershipNo binding

Erectile dysfunctionDKK 104 (DKK 1,349 per year)DKK 149
Hair lossDKK 119 (DKK 1,549 per year)DKK 169

The first 4 weeks cost DKK 0, and there is no start-up fee. You only pay once the doctor has approved the treatment.

A single consultation about erectile dysfunction without membership costs DKK 299. At your own GP, the consultation is covered by the public health insurance (sygesikringen), but you pay for the medicine at the pharmacy whichever doctor prescribed it.

Is it safe to use an online doctor in Denmark?

Yes, when the doctor is licensed and the clinic is a registered treatment site, because online care must meet the same requirements as all other medical care in Denmark.

You can look up any doctor's licence in the public authorisation register, and all treatment sites in Denmark must be registered with the Danish Patient Safety Authority. Recepta ApS is a registered treatment site under its supervision, and the doctor responsible is Adam Omari, a licensed doctor. Data is stored under GDPR on servers in the EU, and all doctors have full confidentiality. Recepta's patient insurance with Tryg covers all members.

Stay away from websites that sell prescription medicine without a prescription or without a consultation with a doctor. It is illegal, and the products are often fake.
