Short answer

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) needs a prescription from a licensed doctor in Denmark, who checks that your BMI is 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related disease. One pen lasts 4 weeks and costs DKK 1,579.65 on the 2.5 mg starting dose and up to DKK 3,845.60 on 12.5 and 15 mg at Danish pharmacies (28 September to 11 October 2026), with no subsidy.

What is Mounjaro, and is it approved for weight loss in Denmark?

Mounjaro is a prescription medicine from Eli Lilly with the active substance tirzepatide, approved in the EU for weight management and for type 2 diabetes.

Tirzepatide mimics two gut hormones at once: GLP-1, which Wegovy and Ozempic also mimic, and GIP. Both reduce appetite, slow down how fast the stomach empties and improve how the body handles blood sugar. Mounjaro is injected under the skin once a week with a prefilled pen.

For weight management it is approved for adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related disease such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, prediabetes or PCOS.

How do I get Mounjaro in Denmark?

You get Mounjaro through a licensed doctor who assesses you and sends an e-prescription to the Danish pharmacy you choose.

  1. Take the test and bookAt Recepta you answer a few questions on the weight loss page and book a free video consultation. The booking pages are in Danish.
  2. The doctor assesses youA licensed Danish doctor assesses whether Mounjaro is suitable for you and chooses the starting dose.
  3. E-prescription to your own pharmacyThe prescription is sent electronically to your own pharmacy, often the same day. You collect and pay for the pen there.

How is the Mounjaro dose increased?

You start on 2.5 mg once a week for 4 weeks, and the doctor then increases the dose by 2.5 mg every fourth week to 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5 and at most 15 mg.

The increase stops when you have the effect you and the doctor are aiming for and tolerate the dose without troublesome side effects. Many settle on 5 to 10 mg. The pen contains 4 doses, which is 4 weeks of treatment, and you inject in the stomach, thigh or upper arm on a fixed day of the week.

How much weight do people lose on Mounjaro?

In the SURMOUNT-1 study, participants lost 15.0%, 19.5% and 20.9% of their body weight on average after 72 weeks on 5, 10 and 15 mg, against 3.1% on placebo.

On the highest dose, about 6 in 10 lost at least 20%. In SURMOUNT-5, where Mounjaro was compared directly with Wegovy, participants lost about 20% on Mounjaro against about 14% on Wegovy over 72 weeks. The figures are group averages and assume that you also change diet and habits.

What are the side effects of Mounjaro?

The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, stomach pain and reduced appetite, mainly at the start and after dose increases.

Most people find they ease after a couple of weeks. Rare but serious side effects are inflammation of the pancreas and gallstones. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2 syndrome in yourself or your close family. If you use the contraceptive pill, absorption may be reduced in the weeks after a dose increase; talk to the doctor about this.

Mounjaro or Wegovy: which should I choose?

The doctor chooses with you based on your health, other medication, price and stock, since Mounjaro gave more weight loss in the studies while Wegovy has the longest documentation.

Wegovy is also approved to protect the heart in people with known heart disease and is often slightly cheaper on the high doses. Side effects are similar, and you can switch later if one does not suit you. Read more in Wegovy in Denmark and weight loss medication in Denmark.
