How do I get Wegovy in Denmark?
You get Wegovy in Denmark through a doctor who assesses you and sends an electronic prescription to a Danish pharmacy, where you collect and pay for the pens.
Wegovy is prescription-only medicine in Denmark and the rest of the EU. Any licensed Danish doctor may prescribe it, including a doctor at an online clinic, after a consultation where the doctor has reviewed your health and your other medication.
The prescription is electronic. It is stored on your CPR number in the shared Danish prescription system, so you can collect Wegovy at the pharmacy you choose or order it from a registered Danish online pharmacy.
- Answer a few questionsAt Recepta you enter your height, weight and health on the weight loss page, so the doctor knows in advance whether you may qualify. The booking pages are in Danish.

- Collect Wegovy at your pharmacyIf the doctor approves the treatment, the e-prescription is sent electronically, often the same day, and you pay for the medicine at the pharmacy.
- Follow-up and dose increasesThe same doctor follows you through the dose increases every 4 weeks and adjusts the plan if you get side effects.
Who can get Wegovy in Denmark?
Adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or a BMI of 27 or more with at least one weight-related disease, can be considered for Wegovy.
Weight-related diseases include type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea and cardiovascular disease.
Wegovy must not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and it should be stopped at least two months before a planned pregnancy. Previous inflammation of the pancreas, certain rare hereditary thyroid diseases, severe kidney or liver disease and an active eating disorder are among the situations where the doctor advises against treatment or requires special caution.
How much does Wegovy cost in Denmark?
Wegovy costs DKK 1,284.25 per 4 weeks on the starting doses and DKK 2,296.55 on 2.4 mg at Danish pharmacies in the price period 28 September to 11 October 2026.

There is no general subsidy for weight loss medication in Denmark, so you pay the full pharmacy price whether the prescription comes from your own GP or an online clinic. A doctor can apply for an individual subsidy in special cases, but it is rarely granted for weight loss.
On top of the medicine comes the doctor-led programme. At Recepta the consultation is free, the first 4 weeks cost DKK 0, and after that the membership is DKK 138 per 4 weeks with a 1-year membership (DKK 1,799 paid yearly) or DKK 199 per 4 weeks with no binding. See the full calculation in what weight loss treatment costs in Denmark.
How is the Wegovy dose increased?
Wegovy starts at 0.25 mg once a week and is increased every 4 weeks through 0.5, 1 and 1.7 mg to the maintenance dose of 2.4 mg from week 17.
Each dose is taken for at least four weeks before moving on, so the full plan takes at least 16 weeks. The slow start keeps side effects down. You inject on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food, in the stomach, thigh or upper arm.
If you forget a dose, take it within five days; otherwise skip it. If side effects are too strong at one step, the doctor can keep you on the lower dose for a few more weeks. In 2026 the EU also approved a dose of 7.2 mg for people who do not get enough effect on 2.4 mg.
How much weight do people lose on Wegovy?
In the STEP 1 study, adults on Wegovy 2.4 mg lost 14.9% of their body weight on average after 68 weeks, against 2.4% on placebo.
STEP 1 included 1,961 adults without diabetes. About two in three lost at least 10%, and roughly one in three lost at least 20%. In STEP 5, which followed participants for two years, the weight loss held at about 15%. All participants also received diet and exercise advice, and these are group averages: an individual can lose more or less.
Wegovy mimics the gut hormone GLP-1. You feel full sooner and think less about food. It changes appetite, not metabolism, so it works best together with changes in diet and habits that you can keep afterwards.
What are the side effects of Wegovy?
The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and stomach pain, and they are usually worst in the days after a dose increase.
In STEP 1, about 44% had nausea, and about 7% stopped treatment because of side effects, against 3% on placebo. Tiredness, headache, dizziness and hair loss are also seen. Small, frequent, low-fat meals and plenty to drink help most people.
Rare but serious side effects are gallstones and gallbladder inflammation, inflammation of the pancreas and, in people with diabetes, worsening of eye disease. Severe stomach pain that does not go away needs a doctor the same day.
Is Wegovy the same as Ozempic, and is there a Wegovy pill?
Wegovy and Ozempic contain the same active substance, semaglutide, but Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes and Wegovy for weight loss; Wegovy also exists as a daily tablet.
Prescribing Ozempic for weight loss is use outside its approved indication, and Recepta does not do it. The Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide) was approved in the EU on 15 July 2026 and launched in Denmark on 28 September 2026.
