What does weight loss treatment in Denmark cost, and what is included?
The cost has two parts: the clinic programme, which covers the doctor's assessment, prescription and follow-up, and the medicine, which you pay for at the pharmacy.
When a clinic advertises medical weight loss from a low monthly amount, that is the price of the clinic's programme, not the medicine. The medicine is a separate bill at the pharmacy, and it is the same whichever clinic you choose. That is why it makes sense to work out the two parts separately.
The other thing that often gets lost is the subsidy: there is none. Medicines approved for weight management are not subsidised in Denmark, so the pharmacy price is the full price.

If the doctor does not approve you, you pay nothing. The two memberships cover the same: the same doctor throughout, prescriptions to your own pharmacy, follow-up every 4 weeks and the option to write to the doctor in the patient portal. The only difference is whether you commit for a year to get the lower price. The first year of the 1-year membership costs DKK 1,660, because the first 4 weeks are free.

What does a full year of weight loss treatment cost?
With Wegovy and the 1-year membership, you pay DKK 0 to Recepta and DKK 1,284.25 at the pharmacy for the first 4 weeks, and about DKK 2,450 per month on the maintenance dose.
During the dose increase, weeks 5 to 12, the programme is DKK 138 plus about DKK 1,300 for the medicine per 4 weeks. From week 17 on the maintenance dose, it is DKK 138 plus about DKK 2,300 per 4 weeks, which is about DKK 2,450 a month. If you choose the membership with no binding, the programme is DKK 199 per 4 weeks, which is DKK 61 more. In other words, the medicine is 85 to 90% of the total cost.
That is also why choosing a clinic on the programme price alone does not pay off. What matters is whether the doctor gets you well through the dose increase, so you do not pay for medicine you have to stop because of side effects.
Is weight loss medication subsidised or covered by insurance in Denmark?
No, there is no subsidy for weight loss medication in Denmark, and the private Sygeforsikringen danmark does not cover it as a starting point.
The Medicines Reimbursement Committee has not granted a general subsidy for Wegovy or other weight loss medicines. A doctor can apply for an individual subsidy in special cases, but it is rarely granted for weight loss. Some health insurance policies cover the consultation but not the medicine, so check your policy.
Can you save money on weight loss medication in Denmark?
Not by buying abroad or without a prescription, which is illegal and often means fake products, but by following the doctor's dose plan and staying on the lowest dose that works.
Some patients reach their goal on 1.7 mg and never need 2.4 mg. The doctor makes that assessment with you at each follow-up. Clinic fees also differ: typical programmes at other Danish online clinics cost DKK 149 to 249 per 4 weeks, and some charge a start-up fee of DKK 149 to 299.
