Who can get Wegovy in Denmark?
Adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with at least one weight-related disease such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, prediabetes or PCOS, after an individual assessment by a doctor.
The criteria come from the product approval and apply whichever doctor you see. You cannot start if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning pregnancy, or if you have had pancreatitis or certain hereditary thyroid diseases. Being a foreign national makes no difference; what matters is the medical assessment and, for the pharmacy, a CPR number.
If you fall below the limits, no doctor in Denmark can prescribe Wegovy for weight loss. Read more in weight loss medication in Denmark.

In total, treatment on the full dose comes to roughly DKK 1,500 to 2,500 per month including the doctor. There is no general public subsidy for weight loss medicine in Denmark.
How does an expat start Wegovy in Denmark?
Through your GP or an online clinic: at Recepta you answer a few questions, book a free video consultation in an English booking flow, and the e-prescription is sent to your pharmacy if the doctor approves treatment.
- Check the criteriaCalculate your BMI and note any weight-related diseases; the doctor asks about your health, medicine and earlier attempts at weight loss.
- Book a free video consultationOn the English front page you answer the questions and choose a time, also evenings and weekends. You book with your name and e-mail; MitID is not needed.
- Talk to the doctor on videoStarting weight loss medication online must happen on video under Danish Patient Safety Authority requirements. The doctor decides whether Wegovy or Mounjaro is suitable, or says no and explains why, at no cost.
- Collect Wegovy at the pharmacyThe e-prescription is stored on your CPR number and can be collected at any Danish pharmacy, usually the same day or the next, or ordered from a Danish online pharmacy. You pay for the pen at the pharmacy.
- Increase the dose every 4 weeksTreatment starts at 0.25 mg and is increased in steps of 0.25, 0.5, 1, 1.7 and 2.4 mg every 4 weeks. The doctor follows up every 4 weeks, adjusts the dose and renews the prescription.
Do I need a CPR number or MitID to get Wegovy?
You need a CPR number for the pharmacy to find the e-prescription, but you do not need MitID to book at Recepta.
Danish e-prescriptions are stored on the CPR number in the shared prescription system, and that is how the pharmacist finds yours. Recepta's booking takes your name, and the doctor confirms your identity on the video call. If you do not have a CPR number yet, write to kontakt@recepta.dk before booking. See CPR number and MitID.
What results can I expect, and what are the side effects?
In the STEP 1 trial adults lost on average 14.9% of their body weight after 68 weeks on Wegovy against 2.4% on placebo, and the most common side effects are nausea, constipation, diarrhoea and vomiting, worst around each dose increase.
Averages hide a wide spread: some lose more, some less, and a small group has no effect. Weight loss comes gradually because the dose is increased slowly, and when the medicine is stopped appetite usually returns and many regain part of the weight unless habits have changed.
Smaller meals, low-fat food and plenty of fluids help against the common side effects. Severe, persistent abdominal pain must always be assessed by a doctor. For the full picture see Wegovy in Denmark.
Wegovy, Mounjaro or the Wegovy pill: what is available to expats?
All three are prescription medicines available at Danish pharmacies after a doctor's assessment: Wegovy and Mounjaro as weekly pens, and Wegovy as a daily tablet since 28 September 2026.
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) gave up to about 21% weight loss after 72 weeks on the highest dose in SURMOUNT-1 and costs DKK 1,579.65 to 3,845.60 per pen of 4 doses. The Wegovy pill (semaglutide tablet) gave 13.6% after 64 weeks in OASIS 4. The doctor chooses together with you based on health, other medicine, price and availability.
